Pink Box: Inside Japan's Sex Clubs

In Pink Box, photographer Joan Sinclair takes us on a journey inside the secret world of fuzoku (commercial sex) in Japan, a world where kawaii (cute) collides with consumerism and sex.

Unrivaled in their creativity and the sheer number of choices, the clubs featured in this book offer their clientele every fantasy imaginable. Subway groping, visits to the nurse’s office, and comic book character encounters are just the beginning of the immense list of possibilities that are played out in colorful playrooms for adults where no detail is overlooked. Sinclair’s photographs capture it all, while an introduction by sociologist James Farrer provides a brief history of commercial sex in Japan and places the images in the context of contemporary Japanese culture.

Joan Sinclair first heard about Japanese sex clubs while working as an English teacher in Tokyo and returned years later to document them. She now lives in San Francisco.

James Farrer teaches sociology at Sophia University in Tokyo, where he conducts comparative research on ideas of sexuality and romance among young people in Japan and China. He is the author of Opening Up: Youth Sex Culture and Market Reform in Shanghai.

Pink tree and clothes in Zhouzhuang

Zhouzhuang is supposed to be the most famous, or at least most beautiful water town in China. You may have never heard of it, but there is a chance that you have seen it already: It is used during the showdown of the third 'Mission: Impossible' movie with Tom Cruise. We went there on April the 8th and had a nice time. Even though it was cloudy, as you can see in the pictures I took of the town, the views of Zhouzhuang are gorgeous.

Quarter past 5

This photo was teken in Coyote Hills Regional Park, Fremont, CA. at quarter past 5, right after the sunset. I know getting a right color of sunset is very challenging, probably 15 to 20 mins after the sun drops.

Technique : It was a challenging shot for me as in low light, the motion object tends to have a ghosting effect. So this was 3 exposures DRI mapping: 1st exposure (unplanned) for bird at f/4.8, +2ev, ISO 800 where as the 2nd and 3rd (planned) are at f/11, ISO 100 with changing the white balance Fluorescent & custom temp 7500K mode respectively in oder to capture the blue & the pink color of the dusk hour.

The last rays of the setting sun color Mount Esja on a cold winter day

The view north from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is dominated by Mount Esja (913 meters tall/2,999 feet), lying about 10 kilometers north of the city across the bay. The mountain looks very different in different seasons, but I have always felt it was most beautiful in winter, when it has a dusting of snow like here.

PantiPod

My iPod earphones broke last Monday (accidentally yanked on the right wire) and I got a Philips pair as replacement. It's an electric (lol) shade of blue and I don't like it but it's got to be better than the flimsy Apple earphones.
